Traditions

The traditions and customs of Allgäu have nothing to do with a lack of progress, or being old fashioned. You will see and experience both past traditions and modern present day activities whilst staying on holiday in Allgäu.

An Active Community Life

How alive and authentic the traditions of Allgäu are can be seen on certain festival days. Whether it's a festivity organised by the Mountain Rescue Team or the Local Fire Service, each association supports the community and its customs. If you would like to experience such an occasion, then you shouldn't miss the carnival on Shrove Tuesday, „Fasnaziestag" when all the locals dress in their traditional attire and enjoy themselves whilst listening to local bands and dancing. The ceremony is full of historic moments as the town celebrates altogether.

Traditional Craftsmanship

Carefully chosen materials, expert knowledge, experienced techniques and time, are all important factors which makes the hand crafted goods so special. Josef Wagner is one of the traditional craftsmen. He has dedicated his life to his trade. For over 50 years he has been crafting alphorns using the simplest of tools and has become a rarity within this craft. It's worth a visit to the local museum, “Beim Strumpfar” where you can see such perfect local craftsmanship of days gone by.

Allgäu Cheese: The Taste Of Tradition

The Allgäu people have a passion for cheese. Due to the cows grazing amongst the mountain meadows, the milk produced is of high quality. Strict requirements and diligence during production are compulsory for the local dairies. One of the most well-known cheeses of the region is the mountain cheese - trademarked, Allgäuer Bergkäse. Only cheese from this mountain region can be given this name.
In the Allgäu Cheese Making Academy you can have fun learning how to make cheese.

Alpine Huts & Chalets: Tradition In Harmony With Nature

The work carried out by the local herdsmen is in unison with the cycle of nature: the seasons rule their daily tasks. Rural life, without hectic, noisy traffic, just living and working in peace, is something you can still find when you stop off at one of the many alpine huts along your way.
